SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY | SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV Project Name: 3D Digital Elevation Model of Appalachian Region August 2017 – December 2017 Role: Developer Conducted a trade study which involved comparing one closed source (ArcGIS) software platform with an open source (JavaScript and D3 JS Library) variant to determine if an open source, freeware product, had as much capability as a closed source product like ArcGIS. Both software products were used to create a map that showed surface mining activity over a period of 16 years in 74 counties within the Appalachian region; resulting in finding JavaScript to have similar functionality to ArcGIS with the addition of the D3 plug-in library.
