Responsibilities included production, daily scheduling, hiring, safety, quality, discipline and cost.
NEW SOUTH COMPANIES – Conway, South Carolina 2001 - 2004 Sawmill Production Manager 2003 - 2004 Earned promotion to supervise all sawmill production activities for a Sawmill producing Southern Pine lumber for the construction industry. Responsibilities included scheduling daily work output and monitoring yields to maintain efficient product flow and inspecting products to ensure product quality. Conducted in house training regarding safety and ethics. Provided troubleshooting of production problems and coached and trained personnel with new techniques to increase efficiency and reduce costs by minimizing human error. • Directly managed two Shift Supervisors, a Process Control Supervisor, a Quality Control Supervisor and approximately 50 hourly employees. • Ensured efficient operations and improved safety and production time by developing and implementing a plan to upgrade quality of supervisory staff and upgrading log processing. Only one accident recorded by OSHA during tenure. • Improved operating efficiency, production time and safety by developing machine-centered teams with maintenance and relief operators and implementing daily check sheets and standard operating procedures. • Modified sawmill flow to eliminate a 12” gang, reducing overall costs by $300,000 per year by eliminating eight production personnel positions and lowering electricity and saw costs while improving yield and maintaining production levels. • Upgraded primary breakdown system resulting in improved throughput and yield. Dry End Manager – Camden, South Carolina 2001 - 2003 Selected to manage and organize lumber storage and processing including stacking and staging lumber for the dry kilns and planer production. Responsible for safety, quality, cost control, shipping and production scheduling. Organized lumber storage areas and implemented standard shipping procedures to reduce shipping errors and improve shipping efficiency. • Proactively managed one Boiler/Stacker/Kiln Supervisor, two Planer Supervisors, one Shipping Manager and approximately 60 hourly employees. • Reduced labor costs by eliminating eight personnel positions while improving operating efficiencies. • Increased lumber grade out by developing Grader Training Program and by serving as liaison between sales and customer issues. • Revived plant safety Committee, reducing OSHA recordable accidents by 60% annually.
TRAVIS LUMBER COMPANY – Mansfield, Arkansas 2000 - 2001 Plant Manager Brought on to manage production for a Sawmill producing Southern Pine Lumber for the construction industry. Additional responsibilities included controlling costs while maintaining quality of products and safety of operations and personnel. • Managed activities of 130 employees producing 130 million board feet of lumber per year. • Developed safety program and received commendation from Arkansas OSHA program for successfully passing safety inspection.
SELF-EMPLOYED – Dibold, Texas 2000 Consultant Contracted to review all operations at five Sawmills for Temple Industries. Completed formal review for each Sawmill and presented results with recommendations for improvement to the Division Vice President.
INTERNATIONAL PAPER – Washington, Georgia 1985 - 2000 General Manager Earned promotions through a series of positions of increasing responsibility to manage production for the second largest sawmill for a company with 14 sawmills located throughout the United States. Responsible for overall profits and losses in addition to production, safety, quality, cost control and capital planning. • Managed activities of 200 employees for the fourth largest producer of Southern Yellow Pine in the country. • Increased production output from 75 million board feet produced in 1985 to 186 million board feet produced in 1996 through capital improvements, innovations, creativity and teamwork.
