Objective:
ROBERT G. SHAW
3322 Hart Drive Orangeburg, SC 29118 803-536-3254 bobgwtw@earthlink.net

OBJECTIVE
A professional position in materials management that utilizes my skills in problem solving and troubleshooting, system design and implementation, negotiation, and contract management to
• streamline and improve effectiveness of purchasing, receiving, and distribution functions
• provide materials in a cost effective and as needed basis
• build strong, productive working relationships with peers, staff, and management.

SKILLS and ABILITIES
• Budget Analysis and Management • Supply Chain Management
• Warehousing and Inventory Control • Capital Program Management
• Procurement and Purchasing • Customer and Results Focus
• Persuasive and clear communication • Cost Control and Reduction

SELECTED BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENTS
Improve efficiency. Assumed responsibility for operating room inventories and discovered that no record of items in inventory was available in the hospital. Designed user-friendly system to record and manage suture inventory. Discovered that duplication of materials existed, and 30% of this inventory had not been used in over one year. Worked with individual surgeons and surgical committees to eliminate no movement and duplicate inventories. Increased storage space, reduced line items by 30%, and reduced inventory investment by $30,000.

Negotiate. When hospital recruited 5 new orthopedic surgeons, I was charged with providing the equipment, implants, hardware, and supplies to support them. Negotiated with 3 major vendors to supply trauma hardware on consignment & avoided $18,000 in inventory costs. Persuaded the 5 surgeons to agree to use hip and knee implants of a single manufacturer and reduced cost of these products 30%.

Develop effective systems and processes. As director of newly consolidated materials management department, found inadequate and antiquated record keeping system. Organized problem solving committee, obtained senior management buy in, and within 4 months, had an automated materials management program of my design operational. By the 8\8h month, we were turning the inventory dollars every 27-28 days, had a consistent order fill rate of over 99%, eliminated all no movement and obsolete inventory in warehouse, and reduced staff by one FTE.

Improve service. In one case, communications with our internal customers was difficult and frustrating following a merger of 6 purchasing and storeroom functions. I created the position of Customer Service Supervisor and staffed it with a knowledgeable, seasoned employee. A direct report line gave me information about areas most needing improvement, provided more time for distribution center staff, improved department morale and relations with internal customers, and decreased complaints and phone calls.

Save money. I took initiative to identify areas where we might save costs without impacting quality. I worked directly with the VP of MIS to develop data processing equipment specifications and maintenance contracts. By purchasing rather than leasing equipment, we saved $225,000 per year.
