Experience: Operations Manager, R&D Plastics of Hickory March 2000November 2005 Hickory, NC ∙ Began as a consultant providing technical assistance for the startup of a new company. ∙ Started the company with 20,000 sq/ft plant, 3 extrusion lines, and less than 15 employees. ∙ After 2 years in a smaller plant, setup a larger operation in a 40,000 sq/ft plant. Installed 8 extrusion lines and all the utilities to support the extrusion processing requirements. ∙ Managed all plant operations with over 25 employees. ∙ Developed a plastic coating process for Upjacketing GRP Rods for the Fiber Optics Industry that reduces the density of the plastic while maintaining mechanical property requirements. ∙ Designed and implemented equipment modifications that resulted in quicker changeover times, increasing line speeds, with quality being the main focus. ∙ Designed Low Density Foam Profile Dies for a product line that grew to over 30 different designs for the Furniture Industry. ∙ Implemented a Quality system to track product properties and raw material traceability. ∙ Maintained local customer accounts of sales and customer service.
Engineering, Plastics Technology Inc. October 1996-March 2000 Conover, NC ∙ Designed Profile Dies for the Low Density Foam Process. ∙ Lead the development of a Low Density process that included new designs of equipment and processing for a new product line. ∙ Worked in the development of a foam toy product that was produced for Hasbro and sold under the name Toobers and Zots. ∙ Improved the wire coating process working with the material formulation and upgrading equipment to increase line speeds along with improving the quality of the product. ∙ Increased productivity on the Filler Rod products for the Fiber Optic Industry. This involved increasing process speeds, improving material formulations and blending, along with the implementation of an online monitoring system. ∙ Spent a small percentage of time in the Injection Molding Department. This was working with the materials, mold rework, and mold design.
Sr. Process Tech., Siecor Corp. (Corning) October 1984-May 1995 Hickory, NC ∙ Started as an extrusion line operator in the Cable Jacketing Department. ∙ In 1988 was part of the first work cell group witch brought together all 4 departments in the plant to one area as a new concept for manufacturing. ∙ In 1990 was selected to help develop a new cable design called Slotted Core Ribbon for the Japanese market. The new design required a new type of rotating cabling machine and a new concept of tooling. All development took place at Siemens in Germany and the new product was then transferred to Hickory, NC. ∙ As the Sr. Process Technician worked in engineering on process improvements, new equipment, and new cable designs for Slotted Core Ribbon.
Education: High School Diploma 1978-1981 ∙ Graduated Carthage Central High School in Carthage, NY
Army National Guard 1981-1989 ∙ Completed a Metal Working and Fabrication school, (MOS 44B) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. ∙ Was part of a maintenance organization stationed at Carthage, NY. ∙ Moved to NC in 1984 and joined a Mechanized Infantry Division, (MOS 11B) Detachment stationed at Newton, NC. ∙ As Chief Computer, controlled fire missions for 2 sections of 4.2 track mounted mortars. ∙ Received an Honorable Discharge.
Skills: ∙ Plastic extrusion process design, controls, and trouble shooting. ∙ Broad knowledge of physical and chemical foaming agents used for the weight reduction in plastic polymer processing. ∙ Managing people and products for daily plant operations. ∙ Auto Cad LT ∙ MS office
Additional Information: Installation R&D Lay-out, organized, and installed 8 extrusion lines. The lines consisted of 2 lines for Low Density Foam, 2 lines for Filler Rod products, 2 lines for Upjacketing over GRP and Wire, and 2 lines for coating Low Carbon Annealed Wire. All but 1 of the extrusion lines was bought as individual components and put together to manufacture specific products. Installed 2 lines at the smaller plant. 1 line was a multi-purpose line for producing Filler Rod and Upjacketing GRP, the other line was for Upjacketing Wire and GRP. Put in a plant air system that used a large accumulation ring around the plant for equal air pressure and 2 air compressors. The 75hp air compressor was the main system and a 45hp for a back-up unit. Bought and installed a 130 ton water cooling tower system for the extrusion lines that did not have a closed loop cooling system. Fabricated the framework for the cooling tower and rented a small crane to install the unit. Sub contracted out the installation of the 3000 amp switchgear and installing two 1000 amp bus bars. Sub contracted out a turn key system for the Iso-Butane bulk tank and feed lines that came into the building for supplying the blowing agent to the extruder. The installation met state and local code with the approval of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Installed a 200hp foam densifier for material reprocessing. Installed 2 bulk handling systems for the plastic material transfer from the silo to the extruders.
Installation PTI Lay-out and helped to install 2 Low Density foam lines and one wire coating line.
Installation Siecor Helped on the installation of 2 Slotted Core lines.
Equipment Installed and wired up AC drives ranging from 1hp to 200hp. Installed and wired up AC Vector drives ranging from 2hp to 20hp. Installed and wired up DC drives ranging from .5hp to 175hp. Wired up 120v AC and 24v DC control systems. Mechanical systems for the Extruders, Take-ups, Pay-offs, Caterpillar and Drum Capstans, Water Pumps, Material Blenders, Gear Boxes, and more. Extruder heating and cooling systems.
