Objective: Biography/Artists statement of Alisha Naomi Fisher
I was born in Montreal, Canada in the year 1973. I was raised by an artist/photographer father & a musician mother. I grew up expressing my art by drawing on our family’s front door & on paper. My father would give me all kinds of interesting fabrics & hats in which to dress up in.
I went to a fine arts high school called F.A.C.E in Montreal across the street from McGill College (a top class university in line with Harvard). The extra courses emphasized music rather then art & theatre but these were included in the curriculum. In high school I joined a children’s choir. We went to Germany & Austria. In Austria we came in second in a choral competition. We also sang at Carnegie Hall in N.Y.C.
After graduation from high school I studied Fine arts for 3 years from 1991-94 at John Abbott college in St. Anne De Bellevue, Quebec. I came first in a photo contest at the college. I also minored in women’s studies there.
After this I went to Concordia University; the only accredited University in Canada with an arts program. There I studied textiles, painting & women’s studies for one year; 1994-95.
I took craft workshops including weaving and stained glass at a women’s art collective in Montreal Canada in 1999.
I rested for six years before I went back to school formally to continue my education. I studied computer graphics & secretarial computer courses for 6 months at Compu-tech career college- 2001; a vocational college in Ontario, Canada.
From 1995-2001 I exhibited: • My photographs at the main public library in Vancouver & my illustrations at Gallery Gachet also in Vancouver. • My encaustic mixed media art piece at Barrymore’s a night club in Ottawa, Canada. • My photographs, mixed media art at Porte Disparu a trendy café/gallery in Montreal.
In 2002 I had my first solo exhibition of my goddess or nymph photography (or fusion art photography) at the focus art gallery (an independent and controversial gallery) in Montreal. Mt show was picked up by the local media & I was featured on global news (televised) across Canada.
During the summer of 2003 in Montreal I participated in two festivals as a performance artist; The Fringe Festival & the just for laughs festival.
I participated in the trash art fashion show in Hilo, Hawaii in September of 2004.
• I exhibited my fusion photo-art with other photo artists in Point Reyes, California at Gallery Route 1 in the summer of 2004. • I participated in a group show with other photo artists at Art in the iron works in Hilo, Hawaii; 2004. • My Orchid flower nymph photograph got on the cover of the Haleakala Times on Maui in 2005.
For the past four years I have been exploring the world of photography & fusing all these ingredients together: nature, jewelry, costume, hair design, body painting and background art. I take my photographs primarily outdoors in nature working with natural light. My nomadic lifestyle has produced a kind of documentary style photo art. When I get a chance I would like to take my fusion art photographs a step further & produce a collection re-touched in photo-shop as well as printing my pictures on fabric, Ceramic and natural papers. Of course a grant would help me achieve this. It all started on a trip to the Madeleine Islands, Quebec, Canada in August of 1999. I wrapped up my best friend Maya in the giant seaweed found there. She looked like a mermaid washed up on shore that had turned into a human. She looked like she was wearing a long and flowing dress. I put a little bit of water color paint on different part of her body as well as a variety of island shells. I have done this type of photo art on a variety of different models from 2001 to 2004. I began using myself as a model in 2004(Arizona, U.S.A) as well as doing more background art. I have also worked with using recyclable materials such as plastics, newspapers & nick knacks in an urban setting
Some of my fusion art & other forms of art can be seen on my web-sites: www.terminus1525.ca/studio/view/471 (with a link to an older web-site)
