Objective: As a veteran development professional with a strong background in virtually all areas of fundraising and marketing for nonprofit organizations, I believe I could make a considerable contribution to your organization.
My background includes advertising, public relations and media experience as well, all of which I have brought to bear in major development and development management positions over the past 18 years.
Given my experience both in Washington and in the heartland, I bring a well-rounded understanding of constituencies, communications with constituencies and fundraising strategies and tactics to the table.
I will consider both fulltime and contract project work. References will be provided on request.
Experience: Last two positions:
Cato Institute, Director of Sponsor Communications: 2005-2008 Supervisor, Cato Acquisition Direct Mail program. Coordinated all aspects of three major acquisition direct mail campaigns annually, each mailing typically consisting of 400,000-500,000 letters. Work included working with Cato senior managers, graphic artist and copy editor to produce 10-page letter and response mechanism, and with list vendor and printer to develop list strategy, print and mail. During each campaign kept weekly track of responses and identified and researched new donors appearing capable of making major gifts. Campaigns were responsible, using Warwick methodology, for generating between $2.5 million and $3 million net to Cato over a three-year period. Editor of Catos Letter mailed to 140,000 subscribers each quarter. In this role supervised work of staff writer, graphic designer, copy editor and outside printer to produce and distribute newsletter four times each year. Project Manager, Cato Institute Annual Report, 2005-2007. In this role supervised and coordinated work of staff writer, graphic designer, copy editor and outside printer, wrote Introduction and other key leads, chose quotes, interfaced with fifteen to twenty other staff to produce three Annual Reports send to Cato donors including key major donors and VIPs. Distribution between 18,000-21,000 each year. Editor, Cato Monthly E Update. Edited monthly electronic newsletter for donors and others highlighting Catos policy work, educational activities, media coverage and incidental in formation. Sent to 12,000-15,000 monthly. Cato Donor Relations. Responsible for responding by telephone, letter, email or combination thereof to approximately 20 donors each week addressing various requests or problems for them, logging contacts in Siebel donor database, and passing along with recommendations for action requests and problems from major donors to senior managers. Major Donor Acquisition. Direct mail campaigns produced four donors at the highest level (Club 200) with $25,000 or more individual contributions. The same campaigns also produced 20 donors at the $5000 level as well as five at the $10,000 level. (Note that these were not the only gifts received, but the largest.) I was also responsible for identifying, cultivating and finalizing a $500,000 (a five year pledge at $100,000 annually) donor who previously had given no more than $1000 annually. The latter was done through written proposal, telephone and email communication.
Development Director, WYSO Public Radio, Antioch University; 2001-2005 In this capacity, designed and implemented two on-air fundraising weeks annually which typically produced between $150,000-$200,000 in new and renewed contributions, writing on air copy to solicit contributions, enlisting community volunteers for telephones and for on-air appearances, appearing on air to pitch along with community volunteers and other station staff. Also coordinated sales of underwriting announcements to commercial and nonprofit entities, producing anywhere from $150,000-$250,000 in revenue annually. Supervised two other fulltime fundraising professionals, several student interns, and worked closely with station manager and program director in budgeting and messaging processes. Designed and implemented major donor club program for those giving $1000 a year or more and successfully added 10 individuals/couples to this club from among those giving lesser amounts. Promoted monthly giving and annual renewals through coordinated direct mail campaign, working with printer and mailing house on a monthly basis to implement. Overall responsibility for raising between $500,000-$650,000 in annual contributions to WYSO. Met or exceeded this goal in every year with the station.
