Objective:
UNIX System Administrator II – Full Time – Denver, CO
Location: Denver, CO
Type: Full Time
Compensation: $70 to $80k, Plus Corporate Benefits

Skills:
Unix, TANDEM, VOIP SIP applications, soft switch technologies, PSTN switching/call routing preferred. Tk, Perl, Shell Scripting

Responsible for the proper sizing, installation and day-to-day operations of multiple hardware and software platforms in addition to ensuring the proper functioning of the hardware and software. Maintains the highest level of systems integrity by monitoring application software and resolving application failures.

Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):
• Analyzes, monitors and establishes procedures for the operation of assigned platforms; resolves application and system failures and provides general analysis and operational support.
• Carries out scheduled and emergency maintenance of managed systems to ensure that the production platform runs at optimal capacity.
• Initiates installations of operating system software and patches as well as application software and updates.
• Resolves application and system failures.
• Develops and implements efficient methods of maximizing the hardware and software platform
• Analyzes, establishes and coordinates procedures for and coordinates the operation of operating system and application software by monitoring processes, file transfers, error logs, and special requests.
• Recognizes, analyzes, and solves problems and errors.
• Documents the tools and automation processes for Computer Operations.
• Assists customers in analyzing and defining specific software and hardware needs.
• Supports specific efforts intended at new or expanded customer project engagements.
• Tracks and communicates project status to ensure that deadlines and deliverables are met.
• Supports Operations staff by providing operational training and resolving operating system, application and peripheral failures.
• Provides support to management by creating and executing reports and providing knowledge of system and application functionality.
• Supports Development, Sales and Project Management by participating in the software requirements and design processes and assisting in the development of solutions.
• Establishes familiarity with all departmental procedures and recognizes and escalates deviations to the appropriate staff.

Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field and 5 years experience in specialization on managed systems in telecommunication or other high-technology industries; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Previous 24x7 on call experience.
• Experience administering applications on TANDEM and/or UNIX systems in a telecommunications industry preferred.
• Telephony experience including VOIP SIP applications, soft switch technologies, PSTN switching/call routing preferred.
• Interfacing with Relational databases preferred.
• In depth knowledge of most basic system administration tools and processes; for example: ability to boot and shutdown a machine, troubleshoot and resolve boot issues, add and remove user accounts and groups and use backup programs and other system utilities.
• In depth understanding of networked or distributed computing environment concepts; for example: ability to use the route command, add a workstation to a network and mount remote file systems.
• Fundamental understanding of assigned operating system; for example, understands job control, soft and hard links as well as distinctions between the kernel and the shell.
• Proficient with most OS commands and utilities.
• Proven Telephony skills that include alarming and system escalation procedures.
• Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Tk, Perl, vi, a shell).
