Managed start-up, development and growth of new foundry division

DESIGNING
To design a new and more productive casting machine

„h Analyzed competitive product and developed idea of 2 separate, independently operating casting stations using 1 base and 1 furnace
„h Worked closely with design engineer to develop working drawings of machine
„h Developed computer simulation of machine in operation
„h Applied for patent

Result: Received patent and were able to demonstrate the concept of the machine through a computer simulation to promote the company and its capabilities.


NEGOTIATING
To obtain an exclusive casting shipment contract

„h Decided on castings to be included
„h Determined quantities and price of each casting
„h Negotiated terms of contract and received approval from both parties

Result: First and only contract of its kind in the industry. Company was guaranteed exclusive manufacturing rights for certain castings at certain quantities and prices for a 2 year period. Starline agreed to discounted pricing and to ship product on consignment.


CONCEPTULIZING & DECISION MAKING
Directed the move of the company to a new location as Project Manager

„h Inspected and determined suitability of different real estate properties to purchase
„h Once property was purchased, met with architect and building contractor on facility additions and alterations
„h Worked with engineering firm to develop plant layout and physical needs
„h Directed all aspects of construction, renovation, and plant improvements
„h Scheduled and directed move of foundry from shutdown at old location to full production at new building within a 1 week time period
„h Directed move of office and support personnel
„h Scheduled and directed move of machine shop from shutdown at old location to full production in new building within a 1 week time period

Result: Allowed company to be more efficient and productive with a maximized material flow and better work conditions. Total project cost was $6.5 million, within budget and completed on schedule.


RESEARCH / INVESTIGATE & DISCOVER

Developed a lead free brass alloy that had the same casting, physical and machining characteristics as a leaded brass alloy

„h NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) introduced a regulation stating that the amount of lead leaching from potable water sources must not exceed 12 parts per billion
„h Our brass alloy would not meet the new regulation
„h Decided to develop our own alloy so we could design it to run as close as possible to our old alloy
„h Bismuth and Selenium were determined to be suitable substitutes for lead
„h Numerous trials were conducted to determine the optimum levels of Bismuth and Selenium
„h Patent was applied for and granted

Result: Starline was first company to provide castings to the U.S. plumbing market that complied with the new regulation. Patent allowed Starline to purchase brass without paying a premium of up to $.05/lb. for commercially developed alloys.
This amounted to savings of about $100,000 per year, based on shipping about 2,000,000 pounds of castings per year.


TECHNICAL SKILLS

Worked as a foundry/casting consultant in Italy and recently Thailand

„h Contracted and consulted with IMR, an Italian manufacturing firm
