Objective:
My professional career has evolved from hands on engineering, to directing and managing multiple teams on multiple projects, to co-founding companies. Common throughout has been my focus on gathering, integrating, and displaying data over the web. I started working on web technologies the earliest days of the mosaic browser and Java 0.9 to VRML (web3D) to advanced Flash applications. Most gratifying to me is the constant applicability of my research work at the University of California, Berkeley. There I focused on understanding how various and dispersed building designers and engineers were able, and at times, unable to communicate with each other. Exploring and solving those issues tend to carry over to more common problems of communication and collaboration between other disciplines.

Now, after more then 20 years in the IT field, I am able to apply my training as an architect to the field of software development. Interesting enough, they are not that different. Project opportunities get identified and defined. Teams consisting of both in house and outsource talent are assembled. Over all system architecture is designed and master specifications are drawn up. Components of the project are assigned to appropriate teams and progress is monitored. Client expectations are managed, issues are discovered, explored and resolved. QA/QC is maintained until project deployment.

Although I find my primary tools are whiteboards and MS project instead of compilers and graphics editors, I still try to keep my technical abilities alive by occasionally taking in a production sub task myself. I've found that if you let your skills languish for too long, ones ability to think through product design and estimate project times becomes less effective. That and I still enjoy it.
