Job Description: DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION OF ALASKA FOUNDATION (ACLU)
The Development Director manages all programs which raise funds for the ACLU and foster the involvement of our supporters. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Development Director is responsible for planning, supervising and executing the ACLU’s Development Programs and leading the progression and expansion of all ACLU fundraising strategies.
The Development Director will collaborate with the ACLU Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee, staff and volunteers, to reach our annual and long-range development goals, and reports to the Executive Director.
Job Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities
Major Gifts Program: Develop, prioritize, and implement strategies for the cultivation of current and prospective major gifts donors; train board members and others for solicitations; facilitate solicitations for the Executive Director (ED) and board leadership; prepare materials for solicitors and donors. Develop and coordinate an annual comprehensive work plan that will include specific fund raising goals and targets with the ED; work with the national office in coordinating production of appeals. Coordinate and implement cultivation and outreach events to prospective donors throughout the year. Prepare reports to ED, Board and National office; draft correspondence and other special donor materials
Other Donor Programs: Develop, prioritize, and implement other efforts to solicit donors for new or increased gifts; learn national sharing rules and devise state fundraising plans to maximize revenues; coordinate events such as awards reception and membership conference; devise and coordinate one-time fundraising dinners and receptions; establish procedures and assist volunteers in holding donor events; create written and other materials for use in donor fundraising events.
Planned Giving: Work with the national ACLU Office of Planned Giving to develop and implement strategies for marketing planned giving products to ACLU donors and members.
Foundation Grants Program: Coordinate foundation grants program, including strategic prospect research, scheduling, writing, grant preparation and reporting.
Membership: Develop strategies to retain current, and cultivate new, ACLU members.
Gift Recording & Acknowledgement: Assure the proper recording, tracking and reporting of gifts from donors. Maintain accurate and current data files, including giving histories, profiles, and interactions; coordinate with the ACLU National Office regarding changes and updates. Become proficient in National ACLU sharing formulas, produce reports for annual audits and verify reconciliation of funds between ACLU and the National office.
Materials: Maintain primary responsibility for developing the messages, materials, and explanations of our work used in all Development Programs; oversee an Annual Report and other materials that advance the programs.
General Responsibilities: Attend ACLU functions, including fundraising events, Board meetings, member cultivation and other events. Assist the Executive Director in maintaining a strong team spirit within the office.
Other Responsibilities
Member Engagement: Working with staff and volunteers, manage content of ACLU website and newsletter.
Membership Recruitment: Coordinate and implement state member recruitment efforts; act as liaison to National office on membership records.
Database Management: Maintain confidential fundraising information on databases; maintain primary responsibility for accuracy and integrity of database information; prepare reports for ED and Board members; manage gift entry in National database; acknowledge gifts in timely manner.
Supervision: Train, supervise, work with, and help recruit volunteers as needed or directed; establish work quality and confidentiality standards for volunteers.
Some Travel: within and outside Alaska will be required. Compensation & Benefits

Job Requirements: Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience with at least four years’ experience in fundraising focusing on individual major gifts, particularly in advocacy or community-based organizations. CFRE accreditation or desire to become certified preferred. • Broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation and management. • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU or the advancement of civil liberties under the U. S. and Alaska Constitutions; understanding of basic civil liberties issues. • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, including strong oral presentation skills. • Demonstrated excellent written communication skills; ability to write clearly, precisely and creatively. Strength in editing and proofreading. • Ability to work independently and to manage an aggressive schedule, working beyond 9-5 as needed. A creative, self-starter, result-oriented individual, desiring to learn and constantly expand professional skill-set desired. • Exceptional interpersonal skills and comfort working with major donors, Board members, staff and volunteers. • Superb organizational and administrative skills, including the ability to plan in advance and to manage several projects simultaneously. • Strong skills in use of database management, word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet software. • A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance. • Knowledge of and commitment to living in Alaska.
