Job Description: The mission of our organization is to promote the prevention of Spina Bifida and to enhance the lives of all affected. Since 1973, we have acted as the nation's sole voluntary health agency, working to improve the lives of those with Spina Bifida. Our programs give hope and strength to more than 250,000 people whose lives are touched by this disabling birth defect. We have an immediate opening at our Washington, DC office for an Accountant. Summary Responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures. Performs such other accounting, financial or administrative tasks as may be required from time to time – quite often on short notice – by the Controller. Essential Job Functions • Assists the Controller in producing accurate and timely financial statements; assists in the month-end closing and financial reporting process including account analysis; reconciles records with Association employees and management or external vendors or customers • Manages operational data and ensures data integrity and accuracy; compiles data and prepares a variety of reports • Processes all Accounts Payable • Prepares cash receipts schedule • Verifies the accuracy of invoices and other accounting documents or records • Updates and maintains accounting journals, ledgers and other records detailing financial business transactions (e.g., disbursements, expense vouchers, receipts, accounts payable); enters data into computer system using defined computer programs • Completes monthly expense analysis and allocation of expenses in an Excel worksheet • Manages employee credit card applications and charges • Maintains Purchase Order Processing system • Assists Controller with timesheets and payroll related items; collects timesheets and prepares a time allocation worksheet; prepares timesheet forms for each individual employee each pay period and distributes forms • Assists in creating, monitoring and updating financial-related policies and procedures • Organizes and files documents • Provides technical support to chapters; assists the Controller in tracking and maintaining company insurance policies • Manages petty cash account • Assists in special projects as necessary
Job Requirements: Qualifications Knowledge of: • The concepts and practices of accounting as applied to the accounting and fiscal reporting operations of SBA and SBF • The laws, rules and regulations governing financial operations and reporting of nonprofit organizations Ability to: • Perform the full range of technical accounting work required to maintain all accounts of the organization, and to prepare financial reports and statements thereon • Operate standard office equipment including desktop computers with spreadsheet and word processing software Required Qualifications • Must have analytical experience, be accurate with figures, be well-organized and exercise sound judgment in decision-making and problem-solving • 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably within a non-profit environment • Attention to detail and accuracy • Planning and organizing • Strong communication skills • Information and task monitoring • Problem analysis • Ability to deal with people tactfully and effectively • Software expertise in Microsoft Excel, Access and Word; Sage (MIP) software experience a plus Benefits In exchange for your hard work and dedication, we offer a competitive salary (up to $55k/year), excellent benefits package and a positive working environment.
