Job Description: 1) Maintain current knowledge of Canadian, US, and international accounting developments 2) Provide accounting advice on business transactions 3) Review complex business issues 4) Provide Canadian, US, and international accounting and financial reporting advice to company’s internal partners 5) Respond to questions and assist with resolving problems arising from the application of GAAP 6) Handle IFRS 7) Monitor developments in Canadian and US accounting standards as well as financial regulatory requirements 8) Assist with communicating and implementing new accounting standards and financial reporting regulatory developments across the company’s businesses 9) Evaluate proposals issued by standard-setting bodies such as the CICA, FASB, IASB, and OSFI 10) Draft responses from the company’s perspective, considering the implications on business and financial reporting as well as on the financial services sector (in general) 11) Assist with updating and maintaining the company’s Corporate Accounting Policies Manual 12) Handle financial reporting 13) Assist with preparing and coordinating the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements as well as other reports 14) Handle training and education 15) Communicate new and proposed policies as well as reporting developments and their impact on company to business finance and other partners 16) Participate in various educational initiatives (seminars, policy papers, etc.) prepared for other company’s colleagues 17) Train and coach colleagues within the Accounting Policy Group 18) Oversee special projects 19) Manage or participate in special projects as they arise
Job Requirements: 1) CA designation 2) Minimum 3 – 5 years of work experience from a public accounting firm with minimum 2 years in an accounting policy position (financial services organization preferred) 3) Experience in managing or mentoring staff 4) Expertise in US GAAP or IFRS 5) In-depth knowledge of Canadian GAAP 6) Knowledge of financial regulatory requirements and public company reporting competencies 7) Excellent organizational skills 8) Superb communication skills (oral and written) 9) Ability to analyze complex business issues within the ever-changing GAAP framework 10) Flexible and organized in order to respond to multiple assignments, deadlines, and evolving situations 11) Ability to exercise and develop professional judgment in assessing risks of business transactions as well as interpreting accounting pronouncements 12) Ability to make decisions despite uncertainties and unknowns 13) Aptitude to conceptualize issues 14) Analytical thinker, good listener, and a quick learner 15) Ability to grasp technical details and determine the macro-level issues 16) Ability to collaborate with Finance and other colleagues throughout the company 17) Motivated as well as achievement and excellence driven 18) Team player with ability to persuade and influence 19) Ability to act independently with little direction and in a collegial, respectful manner with other people and in project teams 20) Ability to effectively communicate findings and conclusions in a practical manner 21) Ability to manage multiple priorities 22) Ability to adapt to ever-changing workload and priorities 23) Ability to make pragmatic recommendations that take into account the interaction between accounting and regulatory rules and the business realities in a positive manner 24) Self-starter
