Job Description: Summary An opportunity exists for a Protection and Control Technologist to develop their expertise in the System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field and become a specialist technical resource.
This is a multi discipline position including elements of communications, SCADA, P&C and IT. Protective relays, data concentrators (RTU’s) and substations control are primary functions included in SCADA, thus the person must be qualified to operate a substation, take protection outages, make setting changes in protective relays/RTU’s and understand the consequences of these outages/changes within the substation.
This person will report to the Manager, Field Technologists South, and along with normal Protection and control responsibilities this person will share their time with the Asset Management, Protection and Control and SCADA disciplines. Responsibilities As a fully qualified Protection and Control Technologist this person would continue to be responsible for the following:
Have the capability to do installation and commissioning of the protection and control devises on the AltaLink system
Provide maintenance planners, schedulers and system operations staff with information regarding protection and control facilities, status, recommend improvements or replacements, and work progress.
Inspect and accept project installations done by third party contractors.
Ensure a safe work environment for all AltaLink employees, contractors and visitors.
Provide trouble response for facilities in the southern area
Assist and support Substation and Telecommunication disciplines as required.
In addition to being a fully qualified Protection and Control Technologist this individual would also be responsible for the following:
RTU and HMI, configuration and commissioning.
Trouble calls, problem resolution, check out, acceptance between Relay and RTU, HMI, IED’s and ACC including remote IED access and automation systems.
Provide aid and knowledge to other field techs for loading, trouble shooting and check outs.
Assist in prototype testing and development of new products, standards, and protocol settings.
Assist in prototype configurations; testing and documentation new IED’s connected to SCADA.
Assist in identifying Capability Development needs of staff as it relates to SCADA.
Job Requirements: Completion of a two year diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from a recognized technical institute.
6 years related experience with proficiency in advanced PC setup and troubleshooting.
Working knowledge of Protection and Control (P&C), SCADA, and Information Technology (IT) .
Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communications skills.
Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace
Able to work alone with a minimum of supervision.
Willing to accept out of town working conditions.
Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
