SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a Staff Anesthesiologist, the CRNA provides anesthesia services for all patient age groups in many speciality areas. The CRNA administers anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery, monitors the patients physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care of the patient.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Participates in pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and technique. Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as, but not limited to, insertion of central and peripheral intravenous catheters, insertion of invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol; endotracheal intubation and extubation; performing arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
2. Monitors the patient's physical response to the anesthetic and informs the physician of any adverse condition. Manages the anesthesia process to include induction, maintainance and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases. Recognizes abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or form of therapy. Initiates corrective measures including the requesting of consultation. Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provides resuscitative care as necessary. Manages the patient in the immediate post-operative period.
3. Administers IV fluids relative to the patients medical history and surgical procedure. Administers blood products after consultation with the anesthesiologist and surgeon.
4. Appropriately documents the patients status in the anesthesia record.
5. Performs anesthesia equipment check out procedures, as indicated prior to beginning of each case.
6. Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in the perioperative care of the patient.
7. Participates in the Quality Improvement process through case documentation, incident reporting, evaluation, education and implementation of the QM plan.
8. Performs other related duties of a CRNA as assigned (on-call, lates, break coverage etc.)
9. Demonstrates a high standard of moral & ethical behavior. Demonstrates compassion & professionalism.
EDUCATION
Graduate of accredited CRNA program.
REQUIRED LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION or REGISTRY
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio. Certificate of Authority to practice nurse anesthesia in the State of Ohio. Current certification from Council on Certification/Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
REQUIRED PHYSICAL and ENVIROMENTAL DEMANDS
Requires full range of motion; manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time and the ability to lift and transport patients. Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids. Ability to work under extreme pressure.
