Nature and Scope of Position
Under minimal supervision, the successful candidate will provide advanced technical support in mechanical design. Will interpret and translate concepts into design solutions with supportive calculations and documentation. Will prepare, or direct others to prepare, complex mechanical designs and mechanical drawing packages comprised of finished fabrication, assembly, installation, and construction drawings of systems, facilities, and projects. Will solve complex technical problems in a team environment and have regular contact outside the work unit. This position will require considerable initiative and exercise of independent judgment while following laboratory policies and procedures, and industry standards and specifications. The selected candidate may have technical lead responsibilities and provide direction to others, and review drawings for accuracy and correctness.
Essential Duties
- Analyze, interpret, and create design requirements, schedule, and cost.
- Generate or drive design solutions that address requirements and constraints, and translate these solutions to detailed fabrication drawings and assembly drawings.
- Provide supporting documentation for mechanical design solutions that include analysis, schedules, costing, and procedures.
- Design solutions are to be captured in Pro-E Wildfire 3.
- Provide regular progress reporting to task lead reflecting manpower needs, schedule, job scope, and work assignment.
- Effectively leverage others to support the design and documentation effort.
- Participate in or lead design reviews.
- Review and verify the accuracy of the work of others.
- Maintain documentation in a configuration management system.
- Provide technical advice and solutions in a team environment.
- Follow all laboratory policies and keep training current

Job Requirements:
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- AA/AS in Mechanical Design/Drafting Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the application of mechanical design/engineering.
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical drafting procedures and vendor products.
- Extensive applied experience with Pro-E Wildfire 3.
- Applied experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
- Knowledgeable of materials and fabrication techniques.
- Experience with drawing configuration management software.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Demonstrated capability for independent action and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and maintain a high level of accuracy.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- BS in Mechanical Engineering
- Applied experience with Pro-E Mechanical
