Major Duties: What are the Major Duties of this Position? Functioning at the journeyman level of the trade, the incumbent supervises inmate crews responsible for the repair and operation of utility systems and equipment. Systems which may be present include but are not limited to; Steam producing boilers, Condensate return systems, fire pumps, feed water systems, and sewage filtering and monitoring systems. The incumbent is responsible for the distribution of all high voltage electrical loads including Switch gear, transformers and metering devices. He/she ensures that the backup emergency generator system is functional during power loss. In addition to the efficient operation and maintenance of the institution boilers, air conditioning equipment, water, sewage and electricity generation and distribution, the incumbent is responsible for replacing and or repairing thousands of feet of steel piping, expansion joints and hangers. Incumbent must manage the inherent problems in supervising inmates such as the providing constant motivation to counter low morale and negative behavioral and work habits. Additionally, the incumbent is familiar with the Company of Prisons policies regarding care and treatment of inmates and stays aware of any special problems concerning inmates under his supervision. He/she observes and consults with inmates, particularly with reference to assisting inmates with adjustment problems. He prepares inmate progress reports. The incumbent provides guidance, explanation and interpretations of rules and regulations.The incumbent will be responsible for the ordering and purchasing of all material/equipment needed to perform assigned projects.
