Job Description:
Participates in institutional strategic planning, goal setting and on-going evaluation. Hires and supervises education staff to ensure excellence in the presentation of Museum programs, customer service, visitor amenities and department operations. Teaches and trains others to instruct, supervise, motivate and evaluate staff. Works with the curator and other members of the exhibition team to conceive and plan exhibitions and to write, edit and produce interpretive material. Works with education staff to develop and implement public programs for children, families and adults. Oversees the development, management and marketing of school programs, both on-site and outreach. Works with education staff to evaluate all programs for quality, attendance, educational content, cost effectiveness, etc. As principal spokesperson for the department, articulates the Museum\'s educational philosophy. Builds relationships in the community and fosters fruitful outside collaborations. Works closely with volunteers and oversees programs planned with the Museum\'s guild of volunteers. Prepares and manages education department budget. Works with development staff to secure funding and other resources to meet department goals. Works with the public relations/marketing staff to promote Museum programs. Works with the curator and other staff to research, write and develop interpretive materials, including brochures, audio guides, newsletter articles, web content, and other technology-based presentations, etc. Requirements The new director of education must have a passion for American history, literature and material culture; commitment to teaching through object-based learning; and the ability to spark the interest of others in the history of Concord. S/he must be intellectually curious and excited by the opportunity to draw from many disciplines and innovative approaches. S/he must be an effective manager, who can juggle many projects simultaneously, and a team player.
