Job Description: The goal of the HPMAL is to improve mobility in individuals with disabilities (e.g. stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury) and to enhance their overall quality of life. Responsibilities include directing research proposals with a focus on evaluation of movement dysfunction in neurological, sports, and orthopedic disorders for intramural and/or extramural funding; developing and supervising pre- and post-doctoral trainees and collaborators; and providing research and clinical training for graduate and post-graduate M.D. and Ph.D. students. Qualifications include a Ph.D. and/or M.D., significant experience in rehabilitation research, and a successful history of extramural funding, peer-reviewed publications, and team building. Clinical research experience is desirable. Resources for anticipated activities in HPMAL research are available through KMRREC and our affiliates. Areas of research have included bipedal locomotion using body weight supported walking, wheelchair propulsion biomechanics and its relationship to upper-limb pain, and the reduction and prevention of secondary conditions such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease through diet and exercise. Technologies used in this research include a Vicon-equipped gait lab with SmartWheels, a portable metabolic system, bone densitometer, ergometers, and dynamometers.
