Employer Name: EducationCrossing SpiderID: 2360819

Job Code: 6318441

Job Description:
The Center for Education of the National Research Council (NRC) seeks a director for its Board on Science Education (BOSE). The board provides national leadership to promote an objective, evidence-based approach to improving science education for all age groups. No other organization unites this leadership mission with the breadth and depth of expertise represented by the National Academies. The board's membership includes eminent scientists and national experts in teaching and teacher education, state and national educational policy, pedagogy and assessment, research in the learning sciences, equity and access issues, and technology. The director, in close collaboration with the chair and members of the board, provides intellectual leadership for developing strategies for achieving the board's mission. This includes identifying current and emerging issues in science education where research evidence can clarify both the problems and potential solutions. Currently, the board's work has focused on the intersection of science, education, and research on learning with particular attention to how insights from the cognitive and learning sciences can inform efforts to improve science education in both formal and informal settings. This work has resulted in two widely read reports, Taking Science to School: Learning and Teaching Science in Grades K-8 and Ready, Set, Science! Putting Research to Work in K-8 Science Classrooms. The new director would be expected to continue to grow the board's portfolio and has the opportunity to conceptualize and cultivate projects in new areas. The board is particularly concerned with broadening dissemination of its work and improving the interplay between research, policy, and practice. A deep interest in the future of evidence-based science education research and public policy, substantial experience working at the intersection of research, practice, and policy, and an understanding of education policy at the federal, state, and local levels and demonstrated success in fundraising are all additional desired qualifications.
