Job Description:
This is professional nursing work involving ordinary responsibility for nursing assessment, diagnosis and care. Nursing duties are diversified within the guidelines of accepted practice. Primary function is to provide nursing care and health education and counseling in a variety of settings (e.g., clinics, schools, jails, work sites and homes) and to offer instruction and guidance in public health practices to individuals, families, communities, and institutions in the prevention of illness and the attainment of maximum health. Assignments and supervision are received from a Registered Nurse Supervisor I or II or a program manager/director with specific program details specified in program-specific policy and procedure manuals. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Interviews and counsels patients and/or families in a variety of settings; Takes medical history, makes nursing assessment, conducts general health counseling and education aimed at the prevention of illness and the attainment of optimal health; Counsels patients regarding the reproductive anatomy, the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases/HIV, and contraceptive methods; obtains informed consent; Performs pregnancy testing, provides all option counseling and referrals; Responds to requests for medical treatment within the jail, triage patients and provide necessary medical treatment, or refer to Jail physician or other health care providers or facilities as needed; Manages inmate medications including, ordering, inventory monitoring, storage, security and return of prescription medications and other general medical supplies; Transcribes physicians orders to inmate medical charts and files and performs all related record keeping for same; Assists Jail Physician as required. Thorough knowledge of nursing principles and techniques in their relation to medical practice; Good knowledge of current public health nursing practices and clinic protocol; Good interviewing, education and counseling skills; skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices; ability to follow technical oral and written instructions and utilize guidance; ability to keep thorough and accurate nursing records and make reports; ability to interact effectively with a wide range of clientele and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members; ability to work independently within the limits of prescribed practices; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
