Job Description: The Job: Under the direction of the classroom teacher, assist in supervising classroom, playground, and community activities of students with disabilities; present instructional material under the teacher's direction to individual students or small groups; relieve teacher of routine clerical duties; provide specialized physical health care services as required; plan, assess and administer student health care safely within the LVN Practice Act under the direction of a credentialed school nurse and under physicians’ orders. The following are examples of duties that may be assigned to a position in this class. All positions in this class may not perform all of the duties listed below.
Presents, adapts and monitors instructional material to meet the individual student or small groups needs in conjunction with the teacher's plan for the purpose of monitoring students' work.
Assists with clerical tasks (e.g. simple computer application, typing, duplicating, filing, recording attendance) for the purpose of assisting staff in the completion of their work activities.
Supervises students at play, during emergency drills, and on field trips for the purpose of ensuring student safety.
Transports students, assisting them into and out of motor vehicles for the purpose of ensuring student safety.
Maintains routine records for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information related to both instruction and specialized physical health care procedures.
Attends meetings (e.g. staff, parent/teacher) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform instructional and health care functions.
Reports or corrects unsafe conditions for the purpose of ensuring a safe environment.
Collects and safeguards lunch monies for the purpose of providing written support for expenditure of student funds.
Performs a variety of housekeeping duties such as laundry and general cleanup for the purpose of maintaining health and safety of the students.
Assists with personal hygiene, feeding of students, and handling of biohazards for the purpose of ensuring the health and safety of students and staff, following Universal Precautions at all times.
Provides an example to students in communication, self-control, and cooperation for the purpose of ensuring a positive learning environment.
Administers medications and treatments to students according to physician orders and under the direction of a credentialed school nurse.
Administers specialized physical health care procedures to designated students.
Observes activities of students and independently follows through with behavior management programs for the purpose of assisting the teacher in maintaining order.
Prepares instructional materials and operates audio-visual equipment under teacher's supervision for the purpose of assisting the teacher in the completion of his/her instructional activities.
Job Requirements: Education & Experience: High School diploma or equivalent is required; A.A. degree is preferable, but will not be considered for preferential treatment in scoring; completion of Licensed Vocational Nurses Training Program. Successful interaction with children in a classroom or other structured setting, preferably with students with disabilities; graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurses Training Program and/or Nursing program. One year related experience preferred.
Skills to empathize with the needs of special education students; react with flexibility, patience, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs of students; communicate with students and motivate them to participate in learning activities; structure time effectively; direct individual and group activities; make accurate, simple computations; carry out oral and written instructions; make appropriate decisions on a timely basis; basic computer application; maintain cooperative relationships.
Knowledge of proper English usage; general early childhood development; strategies to motivate children to become involved in activities; record keeping techniques; appropriate safety precautions and hygiene standards; basic needs and requirements of students in the assigned program.
Abilities to stand for prolonged periods understand and carry out oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, meet schedules and deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of situations. Significant physical abilities include lifting a minimum of 50 pounds, carrying/pulling, stooping/kneeling/crouching, reaching/handling/fingering, talking/hearing conversations and other sounds, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing: Vocational Nurse License, TB test clearance, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, if required to operate a vehicle during the course of employment, must possess a valid California Driver's License and evidence of insurability. Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant test assessing knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics and reading, writing, and mathematics readiness. Must obtain CPR/first aid certification within six months of employment. If assigned to a class where physical restraints are used, the employee will receive training in the appropriate techniques.
