Job Description:
The City of Duluth, Minnesota, is seeking a dynamic Planning Director to implement and administer the City\'s Comprehensive Plan. The final plan is the product of several years\' work by citizens, city staff and consultants, and is the first type of plan to exist in Duluth for over forty years. The Planning Director manages the operations and staff of the Planning and Development Department, which consists of three divisions: Community Development, Physical Planning and Workforce Development. These divisions contain 33 employees with an annual budget of 6.3 million. The Department provides support to the City Council, City Administration, local board and commissions, and other City planning committees and task forces. A major implementation of the plan is the development of a new form based zoning ordinance. The Department also provides research, design, and advisory services related to the physical, economic, and fiscal planning and development of the city; administers development regulations and monies; implements department policy and is responsible for economic planning and development. The Planning Director reports to the Chief Administrative Officer. This position requires an appreciation for urban design, land use, and development principles along with excellent communication, analytical and strategic problem solving skills. The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills in management, planning, long-range development, and fostering positive relationships with the public. Five years of progressively responsible experience in municipal planning, with considerable supervisory responsibility or a bachelor\'s degree in urban planning or related field with at least three years of supervisory experience is required. Master\'s Degree a plus
