Job Description: Job Responsibilities Position Summary This is a Principal Engineer position within the Network Engineering group reporting to the Director of Network and Service Analysis. The Network and Service Analysis group has responsibility for pro-active analysis of the company’s nationwide IP network and all the services provided. The Database Engineer will play a primary role in logical and physical database design, and development.
Main Responsibilities
o Manage and administer development databases in support of network engineering automation and analysis initiatives. o Develop network device physical database in support of new services enablement. o Develop software necessary to integrate physical and logical databases into holistic view of Comcast networks so that process and work tasks associated with network configuration can be automated. o Develop the necessary automation front ends that engineers will use in their daily work. o Develop and maintain database upgrade, creation and migration programs. o Provide database best practice design methodologies and continuously re-evaluate the infrastructure for opportunities to improve. o Develop and maintain logical and physical data models. o Contribute to the system data dictionary. o Become the expert regarding database system usage. o Capacity planning and space allocation/SAN/stand alone o Troubleshoot problems with databases. o Provide technical support to application/reporting development teams in a timely fashion. o Coordinate with users to define needs. o Participate in IT and business projects to define system requirements and recommend technology solutions. o Provide technical guidance and leadership to colleagues and work groups in resolving systems and/or technical issues. o Coordinate and communicate with other IT staff to resolve technical issues ensuring that sufficient information is communicated and that effective mode of communication is selected. o Lead/facilitate meetings and conduct presentations for both technical and non-technical staff including senior-level management staff; communicate and translate complex technical concepts and proposals into understandable and justifiable business initiatives. o Work independently and provide clear documented status of work activities and business issues that impact the department. o Provide technical tier 5 support during the rollout of new products / services as required. o Participate on interdepartmental teams to support organizational goals. o Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements: Minimum Requirements Education: Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, MIS, or a related database field. Advanced degree preferred. The equivalent in related work experience and self study may be substituted.
Experience: o Minimum of 13 years of directly related engineering experience. o 2-4 years of Database Design o 2-4 years of Distributed Data Warehouse Design (several Petabytes) o Excellent database skills, experience with administering Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc. o Experience with ODBC/JDBCs to various relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.) is required. o Development in Perl, PHP, and various shells is required. o Familiarity with Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and various Linux distributions from a DBA perspective is required. o Development in Java is desirable. o Knowledge of network transmission at all 7 layers of the OSI model and 4 layers of the TCP/IP. o Creative, self-motivated team player. o Demonstrated initiative to initiate and build relationships both internally and externally. o Proven ability to manage multiple tasks/projects
