The adequacy of such a background must be demonstrated by one of the following: 1) current registration as a professional engineer by any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia (absent any other means of qualifying under this standard, those who achieved such registration by means other than a written test are eligible only for positions within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration), 2) evidence of passing the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination or the written test required for professional registration, 3) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, and in engineering, that included the courses specified in the basic requirements and that are fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum as described previously, or 4) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor\'s degree in engineering technology, or in an appropriate professional field such as physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance (should ordinarily be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence or several years of prior engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions). An official transcript is required in order to receive credit for meeting the basic educational requirements outlined for this position, although a transcript copy will be accepted pending receipt of an official transcript. To qualify for consideration at the GS-13 level, candidates must also have at least one year of professional engineering experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Professional engineering experience is defined as non-routine engineering work that required and was characterized by: 1) professional knowledge of engineering, 2) professional ability to apply such knowledge to engineering problems, and 3) positive and continuing development of professional knowledge and ability. All qualification and time-in-grade requirements, where applicable, must be met by the closing date.
