Job Description: One (1) Full-Time Position: Student Development and Retention September 1, 2008 – July 15, 2009
Title Retention Project Student Engagement Specialist (AmeriCorps)
Hours of Service 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, M – F with some evening and weekend hours
Job Description The Student Development and Retention office at Lake Washington Technical College (LWTC) is responsible for providing academic advising for all new and pre-program students and retention activities for all students. The Retention Project Student Engagement Specialists will assist the office in meeting advising and retention goals with the specific sub-population of first generation students and pre-program students (those taking general academic classes in preparation for technical programs). The primary responsibility of the Retention Specialist will be to engage these students with the college and improve their chances of graduation/employment. The specialist will also participate in Service-learning projects via the annual community service fair by focusing on bridging individual student career pathways and community/campus activities. In addition, the Student Engagement Specialist will be responsible for meeting their mandatory AmeriCorps requirements.
Major Responsibilities and Related Tasks • Advise students on academic requirements • Co-teach a study skills class or workshop to improve student success • Work with Student Development staff on recruitment and retention goals • Mentor first generation students • Mentor students who are at risk of being dismissed from the college • Build and maintain relationships with LWTC faculty and staff to better support first generation and pre-program students • Assist in planning the annual community service fair • Complete AmeriCorps training, hour and reporting requirements

Job Requirements: • AA/AAS required; BA/BS or higher strongly preferred • Experience working with high-risk youth and non-tradition adult students in an educational or community setting • Ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds • Good organization, problem-solving, and written/oral communication skills • Basic office computer skills, including word processing required. Experience with spreadsheets/ databases preferred • Interest in the educational field preferred
