Job Description: The Racial Justice Legal Fellow will report to the ACLU Foundation of Arizona Legal Director. The ACLU of Arizona is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1959 as an affiliate of the National American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU-AZ is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with four chapters and nearly 8,000 members and supporters statewide.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Racial Justice Legal Fellow functions as part of the ACLU of Arizona litigation team and, depending on need, may be asked to: provide legal research and analysis; develop theories to support new litigation projects; draft pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs; interview witnesses and potential plaintiffs; participate in discovery and trial practice; provide support and assistance to ACLU of Arizona cooperating attorneys, and supervise student interns. The Fellow also may be asked to engage in non-litigation advocacy, including community outreach, coalition building, writing of public policy reports and public speaking.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES:
Specifically, the Racial Justice Fellow will: • Racial Profiling: Advocate for data collection, meaningful police accountability; work with Governor’s Citizens Traffic Stop Advisory Board and coalitions to eradicate racially-biased police practices; • Immigration: Work to identify potential cases involving racial profiling by local police; Conduct “know your rights” presentations in community organizations, schools, congregations, and other centers of community life; and Implement legal and public policy initiatives arising from discriminatory detention policies, • Criminal Justice: Work to identify legal rights strategies in the following areas: 1) children’s treatment in county jails; 2) life sentences without the possibility of parole imposed on juveniles, and 3) discriminatory imposition of criminal justice sanctions based on race, gender and economic factors; and 4) the system of representation to indigent criminal defendants, particularly in urban centers with large minority populations; • Affirmative Action: As necessary, conduct litigation to oppose efforts to ban affirmative action in Arizona;
Job Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for the Fellowship must have a J.D. degree or expect to receive one by the Spring 2008. Membership in the Arizona Bar preferred. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to public interest law, and excellent research, writing, and communication skills. Applicants should be self-motivated and should have the ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding. A demonstrated interest in civil liberties issues related to racial justice is preferred but not required. Experience working with communities of various cultures. Foreign language skills, Spanish in particular, a plus;
SALARY AND BENEFITS: $40,000 to $45,000 depending on experience. Excellent benefits include paid vacation, medical and dental insurance, pension plan, life and long-term disability insurance, and generous paid holidays.
