Job Description:
Performs specialized clerical and technical duties in one or more of the functional areas of acquisition, circulation, periodicals, or cataloging in a library or learning resources center.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
Assists users by locating and physically retrieving print and media materials, answering routine reference and other questions, directing reference and research questions to the appropriate librarian, and explaining library and media center policy and procedures to library users.
Performs technical work in the acquisition of books, media, and other library materials by searching journals, catalogs, and other reference resources for bibliographic and order information; prepares orders for the purchase of all library materials; contacts vendors to obtain information, expedite orders, and follow up on problems; processes invoices for payment; receives and checks orders; and maintains files of materials on order.
Performs technical work in the cataloging process by searching reference and database sources for MARC cataloging and classification information; transfers or updates minimal or interim-level MARC records; adds items to records; maintains files based on cataloging routines; assists with inventory; mends books and periodicals; and performs all necessary steps to prepare materials for use.
Performs circulation work by charging, renewing, and receiving library, reserve, and media materials; establishes and maintains library routines for overdue notifications and collection of fines and replacement fees; and shelves books and other materials.
Performs periodicals work by maintaining records of periodicals received; processing periodicals; processing invoices; retrieving, charging, and renewing periodicals; claiming issues not received; contacting vendors to following up on orders and problems; mending periodicals; and preparing periodicals for binding;
Provides clerical/technical assistance to librarians in orientations, bibliographic instruction, and information competency labs, classes, and/or workshops as needed.
Trains Library Assistants and trains and monitors student employees.
Uses software of the integrated library automation system such as the on-line acquisition, on-line database, on-line cataloging, and on-line check-out systems.
Operates library equipment such as microfilm/fiche readers/printers, copiers, calculators, computers, printers, scanners, and related equipment.
Provides customer service, such as answering and directing telephone calls, assisting on-site users with directions and general information regarding the library, and assisting library patrons in the use of equipment such as copiers, microfilm/fiche readers/printers, typewriters, computers, printers, and other computer equipment.
Prepares routine reports, records, and correspondence.
Maintains files and records.
Assists in preparing bibliographies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent and two years of library clerical experience.
OR
Successful completion of three core courses in library media technology, and one year of library clerical experience.
OR
Successful completion of six core courses in library media technology.

CLASS QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Technical library resources including catalogs, indexes, and bibliographies;
Technical procedures for the acquisition of library and media materials;
Technical procedures involved in the cataloging and classifying of library and media materials using MARC format;
Technical procedures involved in the circulation of library and media materials;
Library classification systems;
Organization and use of records and files;
Basic computer operations;
Public service techniques for public contact in person and on the telephone

Skill in:
Operation of automated library systems equipment;
Operation of computer equipment;
Operation of basic microcomputer software (e.g., word processing and browsers);

Ability to:
Explain and demonstrate the use of a variety of library resources and facilities;
Operate media equipment found in a library or learning resources center;
Utilize computer hardware and software;
Give clear and concise instructions;
Keep accurate, detailed records and files;
Work effectively and cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and the public;
