Job Description:
Job Summary
Community Mentors develop and conduct their own workshops on topics such as nutrition, exercise and parenting. They accompany the family development coach on home visits and get to know families. Community mentors convey important information, serve as a resource, effectively recruit and encourage families to persist. Community mentors remind participants of appointments with their family development coach and conduct 3-month follow up survey after families exit the FDN and YAP programs. They promote and assist in implementing meetings and events. Community Mentors occasionally provide child care during workshops to allow parents to focus on learning. Community Mentor reports to the Family Development Coach Manager.

Responsibilities
• Assist in home visits to program participants
• Inform participants of activities and workshops
• Attend staff and community meetings
• Assist FDN program with community activities and events
• Provide childcare as needed, conduct outreach and peer teaching
• Communicate with agencies regarding program events
• Reports to and supports the FDN Program Manager and others as directed
• Attend staff and community meetings
• Conduct telephone support and administrative support as needed


Job Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
• At least one year of previous experience working with families and children
• 6 units in Child Development and continuing education
• Attend ongoing workshops in the community
• Family Development Credential or in progress
• Organized, punctual and able to meet deadlines
• Ability to utilize a strength based approach while working with communities
• Communicates effectively and work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
• Bilingual
• Must be comfortable working in a team environment
• Prefer individual with flexibility and initiative
• Willingness to work some non-traditional hours and Saturdays as required. • Valid driver’s license

Job Description: Youth Speak Collective (YSC), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2005, is a youth-driven initiative empowering low-income communities in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. YSC’s THRIVE Family Development Network (FDN), is a collaborative effort in partnership with LAUSD Healthy Start Schools and over (20) community based agencies. The goal of our participation in this project is to help facilitate support services, resources and youth advocacy to families in the North East San Fernando Valley. This grant will act as a catalyst to empower families towards self-sufficiency.
