Job Summary: Northampton is home to Smith College and is located in the heart of a college community that also includes the University of Massachusetts, Amherst College, Hampshire College, and Mount Holyoke College. Additionally, Northampton is within a short driving distance to: Boston, Massachusetts (2 hours); Hartford, Connecticut (45 minutes), New York City, New York (3 hours) and the Berkshires (1 hour). Major Duties:Incumbent serves as the Maintenance Supervisor of the Utilities Unit of the Facilities Management Service Line for the Northampton VA Medical Center. The incumbent is responsible for planning, organizing coordinating and directing the work of the unit. The incumbent will assign and delegate work, set work deadlines, monitors and work, prepares project schedules, provides training where necessary, insures that there is adequate material to complete work and reviews work performance. The incumbent is responsible for maintenance, repair and installation of materials and equipment used in Electrical Distribution System, Communication and Signal Systems, Fire Alarm and Suppression Systems, all electrically-operated appliances, tools, machinery, Utility Systems, motors, Emergency Generating and Distribution Equipment, Boiler Plant with all related equipment, and outside Steam Distribution. The incumbent is responsible for purchasing all materials and services needed to properly install, maintain and repair all equipment and systems assigned to the unit based upon priorities and availability of resources as well as assist the Facilities Manager with developing budgets. As first line supervisor, the incumbent will perform all routine supervisor duties such as but not limited to conducting performance appraisals, initiating personnel actions, such as counseling sessions, disciplinary actions, and recommendations for outstanding performance, scheduling and approving leave, writing descriptions, completing accident reports, inspecting work, verifying time cards, completing overtime requests, etc.
