Job Description:
DEFINITION

Performs journey-level work in the diagnosis, overhaul, maintenance, and repair of light-duty power equipment and performs minor repairs and maintenance on automotive equipment.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Performs the following duties on power equipment such as sweepers, air compressors, mowers, edgers, generators, trash compactors and sprayers: Removes and replaces pistons; adjusts bearings; grinds valves; fits piston rings; tunes motors; repairs magnetos; repairs, fabricates and replaces bushing units; cleans, adjusts and repairs carbu¬retors; and overhauls, repairs, and adjusts clutch and differential assemblies.
Performs the following duties on automotive equipment:
Performs minor tune-ups; adjusts carburetors; adjusts brakes; changes tires and balances wheels; checks and dispenses fuel, oil, water, brake fluid and antifreeze; tests, recharges, and changes batteries; performs oxygen-acetylene and electric welding.
Diagnoses causes of equipment malfunction.
Orders supplies, parts, and tools needed for repairs.
Maintains equipment service and repair records.
Makes recommendations regarding equipment replacement and repair by outside vendors.
May perform minor maintenance on tractors.
Performs related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
Knowledge of:

Types and models and operation of power and automotive equipment
Operating principles and performance characteristics of small engines and generators
Basic principles of automotive mechanics and electrical wiring systems
Basic oxygen-acetylene and electric welding
Tools, diagnostic instruments, materials, and parts involved in the repair and maintenance of power
equipment and automotive equipment
Safety precautions, practices, and procedures of the trade
Basic recordkeeping procedures
Basic operations of computer equipment

Skill in:

The use of hand tools, power tools, and test instruments of the trade

Ability to:

Diagnose and repair electric, electronic, and mechanical malfunctions in a wide range of light-duty
power equipment
Lift 20-50 pounds or use hoist or other equipment to assist lifting
Diagnose and make minor repairs on automotive equipment
Read and interpret service and supply manuals
Work independently
Learn the characteristics of new equipment and update technical skills to adapt to changing
technology
Work effectively and cooperatively with campus personnel, students, and outside service
contractors
Learn general and specialized computer applications
