Job Description:

Duties: Help lead the further development of teaching in this area. In the further expansion of the School’s taught programmes, journalism studies will provide a significant part of the theoretical underpinning and journalism topics will be key elements. The Professor of Journalism will have a key role in the development and delivery of these and existing programmes. The Centre for Society Information and Media, based in the School, includes, as one of its priorities, research on media texts, production processes, reception and effects, and on the role of media in the public sphere, particularly in multicultural, conflict and development contexts. The Professor of Journalism will play a leadership role in stimulating, supervising and conducting research in these areas. In the University’s planned foresight review of scientific and cultural trends, the Professor of Journalism will be a key player, critically analysing media representations as an indicator of cultural trends. In the building of international strategic alliances, journalism and media studies offer outstanding prospects, and a professor of journalism will be a strong interlocutor with prospective partners. Develop and improve journalism education programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to undertake and lead research in journalism studies and related areas, and to help secure funding for such research to provide intellectual leadership to the academic staff engaged in journalism education and research to contribute to the broader development of teaching, research and public engagement in the School of Communications, in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and in the university to develop and deepen relations between the university and the media industries to take on appropriate managerial responsibilities, as the needs arise.

The candidate will have higher education teaching experience, a significant research record, and preferably professional media experience in one or more of the following areas: journalism studies, media history, media ethics, political journalism, science journalism, international journalism. Will have direct experience and a well-developed understanding of the professional demands and social contexts of journalism practice, and a proven interest in researching professional, ethical, regulatory and other issues arising from developments in, and about, journalism.
